410-Pound Manatee Discovered Alive Inside Florida Sewer Drain

A surprising rescue unfolded in Central Florida this week when a 410-pound manatee — a large, gentle marine mammal — was discovered stuck deep inside a storm drain under a road as it searched for warmer water.

Authorities say the manatee likely traveled nearly 12 miles through drainage pipes after leaving the Atlantic Ocean, struggling to survive the winter cold. As water temperatures dip, manatees are known to seek out warmer areas — sometimes leading them into unusual places like sewer systems.

Firefighters from multiple units, wildlife officials, and specialized rescue crews worked together to dig up a section of the road and carefully lift the massive animal to safety.
